THE PUPPET ART OF RAJASTHAN

Just like poetry, storytelling is also a valuable form of expression. We all do storytelling naturally since childhood. It is an impeccable way of describing incidents, sharing stories. Every culture has their own way of storytelling which is practised as a means of education, entertainment, inculcating moral values or preserving culture and tradition. Kathputli is a Rajasthani art form storytelling through puppetry.

 

Kathputli or puppet is age old art form of Rajasthan. Its antiqueness and richness of content makes it more popular. This unique art form is practised by villagers to earn their bread and butter. They visit several cities and towns to perform shows. Kathputli show can be the allusion of local folk tales or folk songs. A puppet show can be considered great if the artist keep its audience involved and entertained.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kathputli is made up of two words ‘kath’ means ‘wood’ and ‘putli’ which means ‘puppet’. Puppet is entirely made up of wood which is covered by cotton and then clothes. After that, a metal wire is tied to the puppet to use it as a string, rest is done by the puppeteer by controlling strings. It depends on the puppeteer to keep its audience entertained.
